Details: Come join us for wine and live music as we celebrate the artwork of artist James C. Leonard on display at Thornwood Gallery. Artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on display until March 15^th.

About the Artist

James Leonard has emerged as one of California’s leading abstract expressionist painters. Leonard’s emotionally charged landscapes often portray backdrops for figures dramatically suspended. Leonard grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and has always been drawn to the early expressionists of the 1930’s and 40’s. The German painter Gerhard Richer has had an influence on his style, approach, and directness.

Working with acrylics on canvas, Leonard uses bold horizontal and vertical strokes and strong color to the viewer’s emotions. “Art has always been the focus of my life,” he says. “Just as our lives unfold in unique and beautiful ways, so do my paintings have their own unique and individual expression.”

Thornwood Gallery has been dedicated to bringing the works of painters, sculptors, and fine art photographers from all over the world to Texas since 2001. The gallery currently represents over forty contemporary artists whose techniques and subject matter vary as much as the different locations to which they reside in worldwide. This live edge table (above) was made from an ash tree that grew in Houston's urban forest. We hand cut a series of butterfly keys in the top in true Nakashima style to add strength and beauty to the piece.

The Parsons dining table features a center piece of highly figured curly maple that we sourced from a mill in Massachusetts. It is a perfect zen table for this downtown loft.

The World of Abstract Painting: The Artist, the Viewer

Today’s perception of abstract painting dates back to 1910 when Pablo Picasso and George Braque invented cubism, which a half century later led to pure abstract painting. Painters of abstract art use a visual language of form, line and color to create a composition which may exist independently from actual references in the real world. Today’s abstract painters use many different materials to make their own art including graphite, charcoal, paints, and collage.

For the viewer, enjoying abstract paintings adds an emotional element. Each person may react differently to different palettes as well as to the shapes and forms in a painting. While representational art is clearly defined, abstract leaves the interpretation, mood, and feelings up to each individual viewer.

For some abstract painters, a consistent “style” is used for a period of time that defines their work; whereas, for others the finished paintings will appear different in tones and composition. Specific examples of the later can be displayed in the recent work of Sheila Zeve. In Art is Refuge, a neutral palette is used along with a heavy application of paint and collaged pieces being applied to the canvas. A great contrast to this piece is Getting Together where the palette is vibrant as well as having many shapes defining the composition. The intent behind Getting Together is for the four individual pieces to hang as one piece of art as shown, to have spaces between the pieces, or to hang separately vertically or horizontally. Theta Charity Antiques Show - November 17-20

The 2011 59th Annual Theta Charity Antqiues Show features more than 50 premier dealers from around the world at "Our Tribute to Texas" and is from Thursday, November 17-Sunday, November 20 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Hall E.

The Theta Charity Antiques Show is considered one of the top three antiques show in the country. Since its inception in 1952, the Theta Charity Antiques Show has donated over $6 million dollars to medical research, cultural arts and educational endeavors in the Houston area. This year's show is proud to present over 50 premier antiques dealers from around the globe. Exhibitors will be selling the finest in antiques from the 17th to the 20th centuries.

This year's show welcomes Emmy Award-winning TV Host, best-selling author and entertaining expert Martha Stewart on Saturday, November 19. Martha will speak at 10:30 a.m. and will sign her new book Martha's Entertaining. Blue Willow Bookshop, 14532 Memorial Drive/ 281-479-8675, has made Martha's Entertaining available for pre-sale and will also sell copies of the book at the Antiques Show.

In addition, Jane Karotkin, the Texas Governor's Mansion curator, will speak Thursday, November 17, at the Show. Jane will speak on the mansion's restoration, discoveries about objects in the collection, and the Governor's Mansion loan exhibition at the Show.

The Memorial Antiques and Interiors 5th Anniversary Celebration

Memorial Antiques and Interiors celebrated their 5th Anniversary and the grand opening of a second location with bubbly, treats, and the best raffle prizes last week.

Leslie Sinclair of Segreto was there to sign books and The Red Vault spotted several of our members among the party-goers. The food was delicious, the drinks were bottomless and the inventory was as beautiful and swoon-worthy as ever. It is so much fun to see our community growing and connecting and coming out to support each others achievements.

At 7:30pm the crowd gathered around the front desk to find out who won the grand prize raffle of $1000.00 to spend at Memorial Antiques and Interiors. Red Vault member Paula Courtney, owner of Courtney and Co. entertained the crowd with her enthusiastic (as in hands in the air and whooping) reaction to winning her first prize ever - and on her 43rd wedding anniversary no less!

Congratulations to Paula and to the hardworking and very talented staff and dealers at M.A.I. for putting together this wonderful celebration. Thanks for inviting The Red Vault!

Boxwood Interiors - Painting Choices and Advice

If you've been to Boxwood Interiors more than once, you know that our front doors and interior colors are ever-changing. We love playing with color and are fortunate to have two incredible paint lines at our disposal.

Farrow & Ball:

Our favorite neutrals of the moment are Cornforth White, Blackened, Pavilion Gray, Elephant's Breath, Charleston Gray, and Plummet
Our favorite go-to trim colors are Pointing and Wimborne White
Our favorite "impact" colors are Black Blue, Hague Blue and Charlotte's Locks
We're starting to use a contrasting darker colors for crown moulding. For example, we recently used Elephant's Breath on the walls and used Charleston Gray for the crown mouldings. The result is striking and draws interest up to the ceiling.
While grays and other neutrals are still very popular, we've seen clients use luscious dark colors for more of an impact. Try London Clay or Black Blue.
Farrow & Ball's beautiful papers are hand rolled with Farrow & Ball paint so there's always a complementary paint for the paper you order. We just received the brand new Broccato Papers. Our favorite patterns are Lotus, Silvergate and Baroque, but they're all truly gorgeous.
We only have a limited amount of paint in stock at the store. We order Farrow & Ball on Tuesdays and usually receive the product 8-9 days after ordering. Wallpaper usually arrives in 2.5-3 weeks since each order is hand rolled based for each customer as it is ordered. There is a minimum of a 3 roll order for wallpaper.
Sample pots are available for $7.00. We recommend painting the matte side of a poster board with your sample pot so you're able to move the sample around your room at different times of the day.
Farrow & Ball is a water based paint.

Farrow & Ball uses more high quality pigments and resins and no low quality ‘fillers’, which gives their colors visibly greater depth and purity. Unlike many other manufacturers Farrow & Ball uses naturally occurring pigments, such as Umbers in their purest form, and they continue to use natural ingredients such as Chalk, Lime Putty and China Clay. Their paints have either low or zero VOC content, making them eco friendly.

Stark Paint:

Stark offers 240 brilliant colors broken down into warm and cool colors.
We're able to mix all 240 colors from Stark Paint on-site so you're able to grab and go!
Stark has recently released the Novogratz Collection of paint from the famed design family. Their colors are bright and vibrant, and we're excited to use them on our front doors! We have to order Novogratz paint and aren't able to mix it on-site.
Stark offers sample pots for $9.75. We recommend painting the matte side of a poster board with your sample pot so you're able to move the sample around your room at different times of the day.
Stark Paint is ECO friendly, water-based with zero VOCs in the paint and in the colorants. Stark Paint guarantees premium coverage. Meeting LEEDS standards, and made in the USA, they possess first-rate performance.
We love the Lead family and the colors Tarlatan, Lullaby, The Long Room and Diva.

Elements in Glass- The Elements in Glass collection are inspiring a revolution in surface design. These innovative glass coverings are suitable for most interior or exterior applications where stone, brick, or wood could be considered. Glass is non-porous, therefore ideal in situations where sanitation is a material consideration. Elements in Glass are both resilient and smooth to the touch, making them practical and attractive for spaces where physical contact is likely.

Commercial and Residential applications include, but are not limited to:

Kitchen Walls and Backsplashes, Outdoor Kitchens and Patios, Bathroom and Shower Wall Enclosures, Architectural Lighting and Mirrors, Wine Cellars and Bars, Water Features and Fountains, Lobbies and Accent Walls, and Fireplaces as well as many more.

Installing Elements in Glass is similar to installing tile or stone veneers. Simply “back-butter” each element with a colored mortar adhesive and press on to an approved substrate. By choosing either a single tone or multiple tones, you can customize a look to blend with the space. Since out products are clear with texture, using a colored mortar brings your elements to life!

The glass material can also be installed onto glass substrates and mirrors. Using our suggested optical adhesive for installation, the elements can transform into an amazing backlit feature or add dimension to a glass enclosure. Using a mirror as the substrate will create unique optical effects as light reflects and transmits through the textured surfaces.

Elements in Glass products are made in the US by skilled artisans. The sustainable approach to production starts with use of highly efficient electric equipment. Also, each batch of glass is made with a percentage of recycled material which qualifies our products to contribute towards LEED credits.

MUM Mosaics of New York- Specializes in stained glass materials and known for the fastest custom mosaic turnaround in the industry. Many of the projects done by them are featured in bar, restaurant, casino, retail, and residential design.

Barbieri Stone- The Barbieri family has been carving a niche in the stone business for more than two and a half decades.

It is with great delight that we made the introduction into our catalog of their hand carved stone, available in classic Lucido and Timeworn finishes.

Classic Lucido is a polished finish with a slight surface undulation, creating a refined look that hints at the organic origin of the stone. The edges are straight and tailored.

Timeworn finished tiles have a honed, slightly undulating surface with a more uneven, rustic appearance and evokes the feeling of ancient stone that has been naturally shaped by time and the elements.

Most of the Barbieri Family collection will be stocked in both finishes and ready to ship for instant gratification, however it will still be possible to special order other materials, shapes, and sizes (even larger formats).

Rookwood- In what is one of the more unique stories of art and architecture, Rookwood Pottery traces its roots in Cincinnati, Ohio back more than 100 years ago. World-renowned for impeccable design and craftsmanship, we continue to embrace this tradition of excellence with inspiring designs and original standards for exceptional quality.

The Rookwood Pottery Company prospered for years, yet fell victim to dramatic changes in the U.S. economy and the public’s ability to sustain artistic brands during such downturns. Yet the company never truly went away.

The company's assets, including over 3,000 master molds, secret glaze formulas, company notes, and perhaps most importantly, the Rookwood trademarks, were archived by several entities until a Michigan Rookwood collector, Dr. Art Townley purchased the remaining Rookwood assets in 1982. His personal sacrifice and belief that such an iconic brand could not be maintained overseas, preserved the history, the art and the prestige of the Rookwood Pottery Company.

In 2004, Dr. Townley found a passionate group of investors, who showed the commitment to keeping the brand in Cincinnati and restoring the brand to its glory. This agreement returned Rookwood to its city of birth.

Today, Rookwood Pottery provides artisan quality products - art tile, art pottery, corporate gifts and special commissions - for designers, architects, homeowners and businesses.

Art at Water's Edge by Judy Elias

Red Vault fine artist Judy Elias shared her studio with us this week. Judy's beautiful and organized studio provides a glimpse of what an Interior-Designer-turned-Artist's work space looks like.

Judy paints En plein air on location when she travels the world. She begins with a small study while on location, a sample of which can be seen above at right, and then when she returns home to her studio she begins the translation process into the larger work, inspired by her original painting and her photographs.

Two more finished works by Judy. The impressionistic paintings look wonderful hung individually or even grouped in a collage. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with The Red Vault, Judy. We can't wait to attend your upcoming show at the Jack Meier Gallery.

Abstractions by Sheila Zeve - A Conversation With an Artist and Educator

The Red Vault was invited to tour the art studio of Sheila Zeve of Abstractions this week. Our gracious host shared with us not only a chance to see her incredible artwork arranged in her beautiful home, but also a look into her working studio where she cultivates her second passion of bringing out the artist in everyone.

Sheila has a gift for showcasing her abstract works of art in her own home, masterfully combining classic furnishings and architecture with her beautiful paintings. The Red Vault picked up more than a few tips and ideas on how to hang, arrange and display contemporary art.

On the easel is one of Sheila Zeve's first Abstract paintings, providing a rare look into the history of an accomplished artist and her creative evolution.

Trained as an educator, Sheila Zeve has also spent many years teaching art and creative expression to budding artists of all ages. The process of learning to teach art and helping people access the right side of their brain has helped Sheila's own creative talent to flourish in directions she had not thought possible. She not only creates magical and expressive works of fine art for others to enjoy, she has also mastered the fine art of bringing out the artist hidden in all of us. From children, to investment bankers, Sheila's gift for nurturing creativity can help anyone find their inner artist.

C. Damien Fox - Art with an Architect's Vision

The Red Vault had the fortune to be invited into the studio of C. Damien Fox this week for a look at his new work and an informal conversation about his creative process.

Damien started his career as an architect yet discovered that the pursuit of architecture left a large part of him yearning for a less structured way to express his creativity. His Houston based studio now creates highly sought after original lamp designs and original works of mixed media art on canvas.

Damien's lighting designs begin with a vintage glass piece to which he adds a custom designed lucite or crystal base, polished nickel or brass hardware and then a custom designed shade. Each lamp design is a signed work of art.

The original art work on canvas provides Damien an opportunity to explore the relationships of color, texture and composition in a less formal way. The most exciting part of visiting with Damien is the moment when you realize his studio-showroom is really an art installation that you can take home with you. Damien's curatorial eye naturally arranges his lighting, artwork and furniture designs into a full composition that takes custom design to a whole new level. The passion for luxury and art that Damien embodies is evident in every detail of his work and the warmth that his showroom exudes is inspirational. Damien the artist, architect and designer is present in every piece.

Introducing the Andre Arbus rug collection from Lapchi at Postmodern Traditions

For the kick-off of the Houston Design Center's Fall Market, The new Pride of Persia showroom Postmodern Traditions launched the Andre Arbus collection from Lapchi Hand-Woven Carpets.

The Red Vault was able to catch up with Art Director Andrew Neave after the discussion to find out a little bit more about the collection.

Andrew showed us a beautiful book about Andre Arbus and shared with us the process of translating his iconic designs into hand-woven rugs that retain the Arbus style yet are updated for current design trends and with a fresh take on the classic Arbus palette.

The attention to detail in the rug designs is evident in the subtle effects of combining different types of natural fibers such as wool and silk in a myriad of time-honored techniques to create heirlooms for the way we live now.

Visiting with Andrew was such a treat for The Red Vault. His passion for creating art underfoot that can be customized for any design vision and his respect for the design genius of Andre Arbus are inspiring.
